Deciding to embark on a big renovation isn’t something that you should take lightly. Whether you’re considering buying a fixer-upper, or you want to renovate the house you’ve been in for a while, you need to budget for it all correctly. It’s essential that you’re able to get the money together that you need, so that first of all you can actually afford the works, and also so that you do not get stressed out about what needs to be done. Sometimes, this will mean that you need to start saving as soon as you can. And to do that, you need to have an idea of what you want, and where your money is likely to go. So let’s take a look at some of the biggest expenses.
First of all, there’s always an extension. And, as you can imagine, this can be the highest cost. And that’s not just because of the cost of the extension itself – which can be tens of thousands of pounds. But, you then may have to get all new living room furniture or a kitchen fit out or whatever else to add to the space. Sometimes, the decorating and furnishing of the new area can be very costly, so it’s important to keep that in mind.
Or maybe you don’t want to add on space, you just want to make use of what you’ve got? Converting your garage, attic, or basement could work for you here. But again, this won’t be a low cost. You will want to gather some quotes for each space or all of them at once. Then work out which is more important and get your saving skills in order.
But then, you may find that you actually need to get the entire place rewired. Or you may need a whole new plumbing or heating system. Again, both can cost. And no, neither are exciting. But you will need to factor this is as one of the most important costly areas.
A New Kitchen
But then, you may be interested in getting a new kitchen. Which so many of us are! It’s the heart of the home, so there’s no surprise that this is a room that is always at the top of the renovation to-do list. If you know that you want to be able to add in a whole new kitchen suite, start to compare costs of different options. And then you can start to save for this to happen.
The Finishing Touches
Now, this one can seem like it’s going to be the cheapest of all. Because finishing touches are always small. Sure, lighting or furnishings or even furniture itself doesn’t always have to be that expensive when you buy it bit by bit. But, when you’re renovating the entire house, it’s all going to add up. So this is why you’re going to want to be smart and allocate enough money to make sure that you can actually finish off your home when you’re decorating it.
